Three Underrated Coen Brothers Movies

November 9th, 2007, 9:13 am by Mike

nocountry.jpg

The Coen Brothers‘ universally praised “No Country for Old Men” hits select theaters (ahem - outside the RGV) this weekend. The new flick, based on a Cormac McCarthy novel, is being called a big and bloody return to form for the Coens, who many agree slipped with their last two releases (”Intolerable Cruelty,” “The Lady Killers”).

I’ll admit that I have no love for “The Ladykillers,” and the only thing that worked for me in “Intolerable Cruelty” was George Clooney’s spastic lead performance. So, I’m glad the critics are lovin’ on the Coens again, and I’m looking forward to catching “No Country.” Still, this isn’t the first time the Coens have had a so-called “comeback” after a few coldly-received movies.

Everybody loves unforgettable flicks like “The Big Lebowski,” “Fargo” and hits like “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” but some of the Coens’ most interesting work can be seen in some of their least popular movies. Let’s take a quick look at a few:

hudsucker311.jpg

‘The Hudsucker Proxy’ (1994) - I can see how this box office flop can be a tough one to love - with Jennifer Jason Leigh’s 30’s-style motor mouth, the bizarro quirkiness of the story, and the setting’s artificial quality. Still, all those elements help make this an unforgettable work. “Hudsucker” is a fun, fast-paced and original flick with Capra and Howard Hawks-style screwball comedy filtered through the Coens’ unusual lens and brilliant visual style. Tim Robbins stars as a naive 1940’s businessman who’s set up by a selfish exec (a great Paul Newman) and an ambitious journalist (Leigh), but all he wants to do is sell hula hoops. The cast is amazing, and Bruce Campbell even steals a few short scenes.

barton.jpg “Barton Fink”(1991) - John Turturro plays an eraser-head playwright who’s tortured by writers block while trying to write a Hollywood screenplay. This surreal comedic thriller was a hit with critics, but audiences didn’t really embrace its dark tone, slow pace and deadpan comedy. ‘Fink’ was reportedly born out of the Coens’ own frustrations with writers block. How they can create such a twisted, compelling and original movie that’s still deeply steeped in homage is a mystery to me. John Goodman’s eerie supporting performance still haunts me - even more than Turturro’s hairdo.

manwho.jpg‘The Man Who Wasn’t There’ (2001) - This highly-stylized black-and-white effort’s look and score recall early film noir, but “TMWWT’ is more of a dark absurdist drama than anything else. This isn’t one of my favorite Coen movies. It’s probably one of the most difficult to embrace due to its ponderous storyline, but the cinematography is glorious, and the Coens pull amazing performances from their talented cast (Billy Bob Thronton, James Gandolfini, Frances McDormand) who really sell the flick’s themes of detachment and isolation. There are so many layers to this one that it demands repeat viewings.

New ‘X-Files’ movie coming July 2008

November 2nd, 2007, 12:07 pm by Mike

x-files.jpg

Mulder and Scully will reunite for some paranormal investigating - and some deadpan romantic tension - for a second “X-Files” movie, reports SyFy Portal. Twentieth Century Fox announced that the flick is in pre-production and will hit theaters July 25, 2008.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are attached to reprise their roles from the series and the original 1998 movie. Series creator Chris Carter is attached to direct. The report states that the sequel will not be a direct continuation of the last movie. Instead it will be more like one of the self-contained mystery episodes of the series and that it will take Mulder and Scully’s relationship in “unexpected directions.”

“Unexpected directions?” I stopped watching this show after Duchovny bailed and the T-1000 took over. Still, I’m excited about this sequel. At its peak, “The X-Files” was one of the best things on TV, and the first movie was a lot of fun.

Halloween costume ideas … from the movies!

October 30th, 2007, 12:16 pm by Mike

So, you want a cool, easy-to-put-together last minute Halloween costume that doesn’t involve cutting holes in a white sheet? Why not look to the movies for inspiration? Here are five easy costume ideas inspired by classic movie characters …

- Raul Duke (aka Hunter Thompson) from “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”
This is a pretty easy one, and the best part is that you get to act like a drugged-out, fast-talking Johnny Depp all night. Just grab a Hawaiian shirt, a fisherman’s hat, some big shades and a cigarette holder (or a Virginia Slim).

- Amelie from “Amelie”
Oh, what 22-35-year-old American doesn’t love Amelie. All you really need here is that haircut, or a wig, a raincoat, an umbrella and that stupid grin. (Yes, I hate Amelie, but she’s an easy costume)

Why I haven’t posted about the Justice League movie

October 29th, 2007, 7:34 am by Mike

justice-league.jpg

Trying to get the facts straight about the proposed Justice League movie is like trying to give Superman a noogie. It’s hard. Really hard. And minus some kryptonite knuckles, it aint gonna happen anytime soon. That’s why I haven’t been posting about every JL rumor - and there have been tons - that hits the Web here.

So far, a number of online reports state that “Happy Feet” director George Miller will direct the upcoming ensemble superhero flick. From there the questions only multiply, and I haven’t heard any real answers from Warner Bros., the studio reportedly committed to the project.

So far, a number of young actors have been screen tested for the thing, but it’s still unclear whether this will be a live action movie, a complete CGI fest, or a combination of the two, like “300.” Also, will this movie diverge from the current “Superman Returns” and “Batman Begins” franchises? Is the short, blond and very un-Amazonian Teresa Palmer going to play Wonder Woman? Does the script feature a violent showdown between Superman and Batman? … Like I said, the questions go on and on.

Here’s from The Hollywood Reporter’s latest report about the casting process:

Miller is seeing about four or five actors for the parts of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and the Martian Manhunter, with a few overlaps …

On the roll call are Adam Brody (Fox’s “The O.C.”), Joseph Cross (”Running With Scissors”), D.J. Cotrona (”Windfall”), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (”Grindhouse”), Michael Angarano (”Sky High”), Teresa Palmer (”Wolf Creek”), Max Thieriot (”Jumper”) and rapper Common.

The cast of NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” is well-represented as well, with Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki and Scott Porter also among those testing for parts.

So, a teeny bopper Justice League? I really hope it’s a cartoon.
