Even though it employs half the cast of “The Rundown” and the trailer reminds me of a long, boring, convoluted dream I once had, I’m still interested in catching director Richard Kelly’s “Southland Tales.”
The release of the “Donnie Darko” director’s upcoming sci-fi epic has been delayed since it got panned at Cannes last year. Kelly says the version screened at Cannes wasn’t finished. He went back into the editing room and his final (latest?) version is scheduled to hit theaters Nov.9.
The bizarre cast includes The Rock, who I like when he’s not playing “The Rock,” Sean William Scott, Kevin Smith, Mandy Moore, Sarah Michelle Gellar, John Larroquette, Miranda Richardson, Cheri Oteri, Justin Timberlake and John Lovitz.
I’m not the only one who thinks this could be a big, strange, ambitious mess of a thing. Other Web critics called the Cannes version an “unmitigated disaster” and “sprawling, messy, willfully self-indulgent and incomprehensible.” Here’s what the IMDB listing says about the plot:
“California is at the epicenter of a political and environmental disaster that threatens to destroy the world in this ambitious fusion of comedy, drama, dystopia science fiction, and music.” It gets odder. Read it here.
