The New Old West

Is the Western making a comeback?

I was surprised by the recent critical and box-office success of “3:10 To Yuma,” and who can forget 2005’s “Brokeback Mountain? Now the upcoming “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” is getting pretty good reviews from the Toronto Film Festival.

Here’s what Cinematical says about the upcoming Brad Pitt Western:

“Anyone looking for beauty and transcendence and a meditation on the West starring a terrific ensemble will be more than rewarded.”

High praise for a slow-looking movie that clocks in at about 140 minutes. IGN has a mixed review, calling the film frustrating but also “an intriguing visual poem” with some great moments.

So, are we witnessing a possible rebirth for the Hollywood Western? Maybe. Now I’m just waiting for Kevin Costner to show up and blow it all to hell.
